Bitcoin Halving and the Year of Jubilee: No Priest Needed

Every fifty years, a horn was supposed to sound. In the seventh month, on the tenth day, across a land that was never supposed to belong to anyone forever. The horn was not decoration. It was law. It said the land would rest, the sold would come home, the debt would let go. And most of the time, nobody blew it. The Bitcoin Halving is the horn that blows itself. The schedule is the priest. The block is the sound. The release is scarcity, not silver. And unlike Israel, this one does not need anyone to remember.

I. The Word Before the Word

The Hebrew word behind “jubilee” is yobel. Before it meant a year, it meant a horn. A ram’s horn. A shofar.

Leviticus 25 does not describe a mood. It describes a signal. On the tenth day of the seventh month, on the Day of Atonement, the trumpet had to sound “throughout all your land.” The sound was the event. The event did not exist without the sound.

Before it was theology, it was a noise on a schedule.

The Bitcoin Halving is the same shape. A signal on a schedule. A block, not a horn. Every 210,000 blocks, the sound goes off. And unlike the shofar, it does not depend on whether anyone still remembers what day it is.

II. Seven Sabbaths of Years

Leviticus 25:8 counts it out. Seven sabbaths of years. Seven times seven. Forty-nine.

Then the fiftieth was hallowed.

The land would rest. Bondservants would go home. Property sold under compulsion would return to its clan. The economic clock, as designed, could not run in one direction forever. Debt could not compound forever. Land could not pile up in one house forever. Every fifty years there was a floor.

I have written before about the sabbath in the code, the six days of work and the seventh of rest. The Jubilee is that same sabbath, squared.

Bitcoin runs a smaller cycle. Not fifty. Four. And the release is not debt. It is issuance. Every 210,000 blocks the flow of new supply cuts in half. What Israel did for accounts, Bitcoin does for supply. The land does not rest. The subsidy does.

That is the important word. Rest. Not cancellation.

The Halfture, capital H, is what happens when the subsidy finally reaches zero. The last cut, the terminal event, still more than a century out. Every halving before it rehearses it. But only the last one is the true full stop. Only the last one is the rapture.

III. The Jubilee That Nobody Kept

Here is the part the sermons rarely quote.

Israel did not keep the year of release. Not reliably. The Hebrew Bible is candid about it. In Jeremiah 34, King Zedekiah proclaims liberty for Hebrew slaves, the nobles agree, and then they take the slaves back. The prophet answers with the bitterest pun in the book: you would not proclaim liberty, so God proclaims a liberty for you, “to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine.”

Only after the exile, in Nehemiah 10:31, does a written community pledge to leave the seventh year and “the exaction of every debt.” Even then, the fiftieth year sits in the text more as an ideal than an accounting entry.

The economist Michael Hudson has spent decades pointing out that Israel did not invent the clean slate. In his account of Bronze Age debt cancellation, royal proclamations wiping out personal debts were used in Babylonia since Hammurabi’s dynasty. A new king would announce a clean slate, free the bondservants, and buy himself a stable throne. The clean slate was a political instrument. It required a king to remember.

The problem is not that Israel forgot Leviticus. The problem is that every jubilee that has ever depended on a human keeper eventually stops firing.

The Bitcoin Halving has no keeper. The subsidy cut runs whether or not anyone marks it on a calendar. There is no priest to bribe. There is no ruler to skip a year. There is no lobby to raise the ceiling. The horn blows itself.

That is the difference nobody wants to sit with. A jubilee that needs a king cannot outlive the king. A jubilee written into consensus rules can. That is why you have to hold Bitcoin to be saved, in this narrow theological sense: salvation is not owning a promise from someone who might renege. Salvation is owning the thing whose release schedule does not depend on their memory. Read that as theology, not as a prospectus.

IV. Why Fiat Cannot Have a Jubilee

Here is the ledger.

The national debt clock at the Peterson Foundation now reads about forty trillion dollars. Its monthly interest tracker shows federal interest payments for fiscal 2026 reaching 1.02 trillion dollars by August, the first time the annual bill has crossed a trillion. Interest is now the second-largest spending category in the federal budget. Only Social Security is larger.

The Congressional Budget Office puts debt held by the public at 101 percent of GDP this year and 120 percent by 2036, surpassing the 1946 high of 106 percent, the peak left behind by a world war.

That is service, not services.

This is the Jubilee-shaped hole. The Hebrew system had a valve. When debt became structurally unpayable, the valve opened. Land came back. Slaves came home. The system reset. Fiat has no valve. Fiat has forbearance, restructuring, inflation, and default, none of which are announced on a schedule, and all of which fall hardest on the people furthest from the printer.

Jimmy Song and the Bitcoin and Bible Group make a version of this case in Thank God for Bitcoin: that unlimited issuance breeds a culture of debt and short horizons, in households and in churches alike. The book argues that money can be redeemed. Halfture goes a step further and says the redemption has to be a schedule nobody can repeal.

The valve is not missing because the designers were evil. It is missing because there is no way to write a valve into a system whose whole point is that the sovereign owns the pen.

Bitcoin is the first monetary system where the valve is a rule, not a decision. The Bitcoin Halving is a jubilee that does not need approval to fire.

V. What the Bitcoin Halving Rehearses

Every halving is a small-h rehearsal.

The first cut fired at block 210,000, on November 28, 2012, at 15:24:38 UTC, found by Slush’s pool. Fifty BTC became twenty-five. The network did not celebrate. It just kept adding blocks.

The second cut, at block 420,000 on July 9, 2016, was mined by F2Pool. Twenty-five became twelve and a half. The fees in that block came to about 0.58 BTC. A quiet table.

The third, at block 630,000 in May 2020, followed the same choreography. Twelve and a half became six and a quarter.

The fourth is the one worth staring at. ViaBTC mined block 840,000 at 00:09:27 UTC on April 20, 2024. The subsidy fell to 3.125 BTC. The fees in that same block came to 37.63 BTC, about twelve times the new subsidy, as people bid to get into the first block of the new era. The horn sounded, and for one block the guests paid more than the host.

Then the feast ended. The fees went back to ordinary. The subsidy stayed cut.

The thirty-third and final cut, at block 6,930,000, around 2140, sends the subsidy to zero for good. You can read the whole of the halving schedule, all thirty-three steps, laid out like the counted years of Leviticus. The last row is the Halfture, the terminal jubilee, the last horn that ever needs to blow. After that, there is no new issuance. The subsidy rests forever.

Everything between now and then is rehearsal. Practice for a rest we will not live to see. The block subsidy exists to give miners a reason to keep sounding the horn until the fees can carry it alone. Block 840,000 was a single-block glimpse of what that might look like. One block is not a century.

VI. The Counter-Sermon

Fair objection. This whole essay is a category mistake.

The biblical Jubilee is about the cancellation of human debt, the return of family land, the freeing of enslaved people. It is a social event, a moral event, a covenant event. Bitcoin’s supply cut is not. Bitcoin does not free a single indebted person. It does not restore a stolen inheritance to its clan. It does not unchain anyone. Fitting the halving into Leviticus 25 flatters Bitcoin more than the text will bear.

There is truth in that.

The Jubilee is not a monetary policy. It is a covenant. Turning it into a metaphor for supply issuance is exactly the sort of allegorical flattening that Bitcoin skeptics warn about. A halving is not a homecoming. It is a subsidy schedule. Worse: a fixed supply rewards whoever arrived first, which is the opposite of a jubilee. Leviticus redistributes. Bitcoin does not. Maybe none of this saves anyone the way Leviticus meant to save someone. Maybe the horn is just an emission curve with better lighting.

If you steelman that far, the honest answer is: yes, this is analogy, not identity. The Bitcoin Halving does not do the work of a real jubilee by itself. But the shape it takes, a scheduled release that does not require a king to declare it, is the piece of the Jubilee that fiat systems structurally cannot copy. That is what the analogy is doing. Not equating debt release with subsidy cuts. Noticing that only one of these two ledgers still keeps time.

VII. The Horn Blows Itself

Israel needed a priest to sound the shofar on the tenth day of the seventh month. Then Israel needed a king. Then a governor. Then a memory. And the horn kept getting quieter.

Bitcoin does not need any of that. As of this week the chain stands near block 970,800, about 79,000 blocks from the next cut. Nobody will call an assembly. Nobody will vote. On a clock nobody set and nobody can move, the sound will go off, and the release will fire, and the schedule will walk one step closer to the Halfture, the terminal jubilee that no one alive today will hear.

This is not investment advice. This is a note about which valves still work.

Listen for the horn.

FAQ

What is the Bitcoin Halving?
The Bitcoin Halving is a scheduled protocol event that cuts the block subsidy paid to miners in half every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years. It is the mechanism that holds Bitcoin’s supply under 21 million coins.

How is the Bitcoin Halving like the biblical Jubilee?
The Jubilee in Leviticus 25 is a scheduled release announced by a signal, the shofar blast on the Day of Atonement in the fiftieth year. The Bitcoin Halving is a scheduled release triggered by block height. Both use time, not discretion. The Jubilee released debt and land. The halving releases less new supply.

What is the Halfture?
The Halfture is the final Bitcoin Halving, the thirty-third cut at block 6,930,000, around 2140, when the block subsidy reaches zero permanently. Every earlier halving rehearses it. It has not happened yet.

When is the next Bitcoin Halving?
The next Bitcoin Halving is expected around April 2028, at block 1,050,000, when the subsidy drops from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC per block. It is a rehearsal of the Halfture, not the Halfture itself.
